Weβve all heard that famous line: βMom knows bestβ. Well, Shelby Annuschatβs mom had that motherly instinct in knowing her daughter would one day open a dog salon. Growing up Shelbyβs mom would refer to her as the dog whisperer, not only for the love, passion, and care for dogs, but it was how she could put them at ease. Shelbyβs mom mentioned that she should open a dog grooming salon. At the time Shelby never saw it as a great idea. However, she wanted a career that would allow her to bring her super anxious dog, Bear to work. She thought about the possibility of becoming a Veterinarian but quickly decided that there would be occasional sad moments that she wouldnβt be able to avoid. Remembering that moms do know best, she decided to look into dog grooming.
Shelby attended a 10-week program at the Academy of Dog Grooming and Arts in Bethany. By day 2, Shelby knew that she would be doing it full-time. She completed her schooling in January of 2022 and opened Sweet Baby Salon.
Shelby and her husband Ben, live in Okarche with their 3 fur babies, Bear Jackson, Opal Jade, and Ruby Rae. Bear, a mixed German Shepard, is their number one baby and is the reason for the name βSweet Babyβ. Opal, a Great Pyrenees was once a true farm dog, now living a life of luxury indoors. Lastly Ruby, a CavaPoo, Shelbyβs little dream dog. She fell in love with a mini poodle during her time at school and knew that one day she would have one of her own. Shelby expresses how she didnβt pick them, they picked her, along with the perfect timing in her life.
Shelby knows that each dog comes in with a different personality, and for that, she treats each one as an individual. She likes to keep a routine for βher babiesβ and works at a pace that allows them to adjust as it is helpful with dogs who may struggle with high anxiety. Shelby says βThe most rewarding part for me is the transformation of going from seeing them in discomfort to seeing them happy after groomingβ.
Sweet Baby Salon LLC is open Tuesday through Friday with a daily dog drop-off from 7:30 to 8:00 am. Once your dog has been groomed you will receive a text notifying you that you can pick him or her up. Shelby understands that life happens, and she is willing to adjust times to best suit your needs.
