June 19, 1865, marks the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had gone into effect two years prior, in 1863, it wasn’t fully implemented until the 19th of June. Hence the name Juneteenth. We remember so we may never forget.
City Commissioner Dawn Taylor, along with many others, was responsible for making the celebratory event happen in our small community. Some of those are Laced in Grace, Wendell Prim’s Merk Enterprises, Lone Oak Community Center in Dover, and Thousandfold Bakery in Enid.
Many came out for the celebration, where they ate cookies and popsicles, played games, won prizes, and listened to a panel of community leaders that included Pastor Wendell Prim, Pastor Zack Smithson, Mayor Geoff Covalt, and Cynthia McCarty.
