Saturday, February 28, The Big 4 Fire Department’s first annual Open House and Chili Cook-Off brought out a great crowd of community members and fellow firefighters, all ready to put their taste buds to the test.
Six different pots of chili were lined up and steaming, each one crafted by Big 4 firefighters themselves. The flavor lineup ranged from “lowish heat” for the cautious crowd to “medium spice” for those feeling brave. No five-alarm warnings were issued, but a few folks may have reached for an extra bottle of water.
The recipes featured everything from classic beef to sausage and even venison, giving attendees plenty of reasons to go back for “just one more sample.”
While the chili was the main attraction, the open house gave visitors a chance to see the station up close. Every Big 4 firefighter was on hand, offering tours of the building, trucks, and equipment.
On display alongside the regular fleet were two new additions: a brand-new 2026 Ford brush truck and a newly donated command pickup.
All in all, it was a warm, welcoming event that showcased great food, great equipment, and the even greater people behind the Big 4 Fire Department.
