In a recent episode of The All About Show, we sat down with Brent Kisling, owner of Retail Attractions, to discuss economic development, the future of retail in rural Oklahoma, and his work helping bring new opportunities to Kingfisher.
Kisling’s roots began in the small town of Burlington, Oklahoma, where he grew up on a farm and ranch before attending Oklahoma State University. His career eventually took him into public service, working for U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe and later leading USDA Rural Development in Oklahoma. He went on to lead economic development efforts in Enid and served five years as executive director of the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.
Today, Kisling brings that experience to communities through Retail Attractions, including a new focus on Kingfisher.
During the conversation, Kisling explained that attracting a new grocery store, restaurant, or retailer involves much more than simply finding an available building. Retailers study population, income, traffic patterns, consumer spending, available properties, and even where residents currently travel to shop.
One of Kingfisher’s biggest priorities is finding the right fit for the former United grocery store location. Kisling shared that there is interest from multiple groups, but emphasized that the right deal may require cooperation between property owners, businesses, the city, and other community partners.
His work also extends beyond attracting new businesses. Kisling is working with local leaders to encourage expansion of existing businesses, fill vacant storefronts, strengthen downtown Kingfisher, and identify opportunities based on what residents currently leave town to purchase.
For Kisling, successful economic development comes down to relationships, data, and telling a community’s story to the right people.
