At a Special City Commissioners meeting on August 21st, had an agenda item for “discussion and possible action to appoint a new mayor.” In July, former Mayor Roxie Alexander resigned, and Commissioner Geoff Covalt was appointed interim mayor shortly after. The Commission then opened up letters of interest for the full-time position of mayor. Five individuals submitted their interest: Wendell Prim, Geoff Covalt, JJ Stitt, and Bill Tucker. Commissioner Kyle Mecklenburg made a motion to appoint Commissioner Covalt. Mecklenburg stated, “you’re a valuable part of our team up here, and you’ve done a great job in your interim role.” Commissioner Debbie Burpo seconded this motion, so it was put to a vote. For this position, it has to have a majority vote. Mecklenburg, Covalt, and Burpo voted Aye, and Dawn Taylor voted Nay, so the motion was passed. Covalt told All About Kingfisher, “I am humbled and honored to serve as mayor of this fine city. We have a number of challenges which lie ahead but in every challenge there are opportunities. Each of the commissioners currently serving and all city employees have a heart for this city and are committed to providing excellent service to our citizens and businesses. I look forward to continuing our work and the opportunities we will seize and build upon together.”
Since Covalt was appointed mayor, there is now an open seat for City Commissioner. The City Commission is now accepting letters of interest from individuals interested. Individuals must meet state candidacy filing requirements, including being a registered voter within the city limits. The appointment will be effective upon confirmation by the City Commission and last through April 2025. Individuals interested in serving in this capacity may submit a letter of interest to the City of Kingfisher, ATTN: Kingfisher City Commissioners, 301 N. Main St., Kingfisher, OK, by 4:30 pm, Friday, September 6th, 2023. If you are interested and have any questions, please get in touch with the city manager or city clerk at 405-375-3705.
