A proposal to bring a new strip mall to Kingfisher hit a roadblock this week. On September 8, the Kingfisher City Commission voted down developer Mike Matthews’ request to rezone property in the 1000 block of U.S. Highway 81, despite the project having already cleared the city’s planning board.
Community Development Director Linda Garcia urged commissioners to adhere to the city’s long-term zoning plan, cautioning against piecemeal changes that could complicate future development. Matthews countered that the strip mall would generate significant sales tax revenue and provide new retail opportunities for the community.
While Commissioner Kyle Mecklenburg voiced support for the project, citing its potential economic impact, others expressed concern about whether the proposal fit the city’s vision for sustainable growth.
In the end, the commission voted to deny the rezoning request, leaving the project’s future uncertain.
