A look inside Wild Fern Mercantile – Okarche
By Amy Townsend
Have you ever wondered how a store comes to life?
Why the shelves hold the things they do, what inspired the name, and what story lives behind it all?
Well, grab your popcorn, because today we’re taking a closer look at Wild Fern Mercantile, a growing little shop, Nixxen Rayne and Co in Okarche.
And as it turns out, this story may hit a little closer to home than you might think.
For Paxton Flatt, the inspiration behind Wild Fern Mercantile didn’t begin with a storefront or a business plan. Instead, it started with a personal journey that caused her to take a closer look at the foods she ate and the products she brought into her home.
Several years ago, she remembers lying on the couch, convinced she had the flu. Her body hurt so badly she could barely move. The aches and chills were intense, yet she never ran a fever. “It honestly felt like my body was being crushed,” she recalled. Then just like that… poof….the symptoms were gone, leaving her with more questions than answers.
After a round of testing, Paxton learned her rheumatoid arthritis markers had come back positive at just 26 years old.
Rather than immediately turning to medication, Paxton began researching food, ingredients, and how everyday products can impact the body. What started as a personal search for answers soon turned into a deep dive into nutrition and the choices we make in our homes.
That curiosity eventually led her to complete nutrition schooling and earn her certification as a nutrition coach, deepening her understanding of the ingredients she now looks for in the products she carries.
The name Wild Fern Mercantile wasn’t chosen by accident. Ferns symbolize growth, sincerity, and new life, often thriving naturally in untamed places. For Paxton, the name felt like the perfect reflection of both her journey and the kind of shop she hoped to create.
Nixxen Rayne and Co. itself is part of a collaborative space where several local vendors come together to offer a variety of goods for the community. Visitors can find everything from fresh bread and locally raised meat to clothing, home décor, candles, and pantry staples. Each vendor brings something unique to the shelves, creating a small-town shopping experience that
feels welcoming and personal. For Paxton, being part of that local connection is one of the most rewarding parts of running her business.
Paxton is also a stay-at-home mom raising four girls, and let’s be honest, that’s a full-time job in itself, and Wild Fern Mercantile gives her a chance to step into the community and connect with people in a different way.
Today, Wild Fern Mercantile reflects the same ideas that first inspired Paxton’s journey simple, intentional choices and products she personally believes in.But beyond the products and the shelves, there’s another reason this little corner shop means so much to her.
Sometimes the story behind a small shop is far more meaningful than what first meets the eye. Curated with care. Simple in purpose. Natural from the start.
