Owen Kennedy, aka “Big O,” is a 6th grader at Kingfisher Middle School. He played left guard on offense during the last 5th and 6th undefeated seasons. Owen is a unique young man; he is 12 years old, 6’4″, and weighs in at 277lbs. With that being said, I will pause a moment to give any future coach time to wipe the drool off your chin! I asked Owen what he likes most about playing football, and he answered me, “hitting!” But with a big grin on his face, he told me about one of the recent games where the player he was guarding decided not to make contact but dove between Owen’s legs. Being Owen’s size at 12 years of age isn’t always easy. We don’t think about everyday things. Owen has a larger desk in the classroom to compensate for his size. On the football field, you will see Owen wearing a high school helmet. There have been comments said and will be more regarding Owen’s size. Owen is fully aware of his size and has an amazing supportive family and friends! I have told him many times I’d be his best bud if he’s going to be blocking for me on the football field. I have already drawn Owen a baseball drawing but decided he needs a football drawing to add to his wall space. Owen comes from a sports family with an older brother playing football at Southeastern University and a dad playing college baseball. It’s anybody’s guess if Owen’s peers will catch up with him in growth. Big O’s journey in football is just beginning. Hopefully, this picture taker will be lurking around to capture some more memories and keep my drawing pencils sharpened. By the way, for those who are wondering, I texted Owen’s mom to verify I heard him right when visiting about his height and weight. The momma bear in me wants Owen to take care! God only gives us one body, and he’ll need his long after his sports journey comes to an end. For now, have fun and make some great memories! If you need a manager, I’ll send my resume.
