Some artists capture reality through the click of a shutter; others bring it to life with the sweep of a brush. Lydia Storm, an Oklahoma City–based painter with roots in Kingfisher, belongs firmly to the latter camp. Her work is so detailed and lifelike that, at first glance, many mistake her oil portraits for photographs.
Growing up homeschooled in Kingfisher, Storm always had a pencil or brush in hand. “I was always crafting and making messes all over the house,” she recalls. By high school, she had turned to painting seriously, a passion she carried with her to Oklahoma Baptist University, where she earned her degree in art. “People say artists are starving, but even if I had another job, I’d still be painting until I’m old. It’s a lifelong journey.”
With a supportive husband encouraging her to make art her career, Storm now produces commissioned work alongside personal projects. Her portfolio spans commissioned mythological portraits, like a Greek goddess Artemis, complete with moonlit wolf, to quick, four-hour challenges recreating fragments of Waterhouse and Bouguereau masterpieces. A deep love for classical art, nurtured through art history courses and a museum internship, guides her creative choices. “The old masters had so much technique and dedication. There’s infinite inspiration in their work.”
While she’s experimented with landscapes and still lifes, portraiture remains her true calling. “They just come easier to me,” she says, though she admits her art school days left her temporarily “burnt out” on painting vases and fruit. Her process often involves the grisaille technique, painting first in black and white before glazing color on top, adding depth and richness to her pieces.
Most of Storm’s work is by commission, but some personal pieces have found eager buyers. Though she hasn’t staged a formal show since her senior exhibition at OBU, she’s open to future opportunities when her inventory allows. For now, she shares her art and process through Lydia’s Muse, her Instagram account, where she posts time-lapse videos, tips, and behind-the-scenes glimpses.
Commission inquiries often come through direct messages or via her email, lydiafrostart@gmail.com. Clients receive a detailed commission sheet, outlining pricing and process, a level of transparency Storm values.
Determined to follow her passion rather than settle for a path she didn’t want, Lydia Storm is building a career on her own terms, one portrait at a time, proving that in her case, the “starving artist” stereotype simply doesn’t apply.
