The Kingfisher Lions Club celebrated a new class of Junior Lions during its annual banquet held Thursday, April 30, at the Kingfisher Farmers’ Bureau.
This year’s event looked a little different than years past. Traditionally held in the evening, the banquet was moved to midday after a suggestion from Paula Leffingwell. With seniors juggling spring activities, awards ceremonies, and graduation events, the schedule change helped allow more students to attend and be part of the celebration.
The Junior Lions program honors Kingfisher High School seniors who have demonstrated leadership, service, character, and achievement throughout their high school years. For many students, being selected as a Junior Lion is one of the community’s most respected honors.
Serving as guest speaker for the afternoon was Blake Callaham with Pioneer Telephone Cooperative. Callaham shared a personal and encouraging message with students, reminding them that life rarely follows a straight path.
He spoke honestly about setbacks, disappointments, and unexpected turns, while encouraging students to stay determined and keep moving forward. His message focused on perseverance, growth, and making the most of the journey ahead, even when things do not always go according to plan.
Of course, it would not be a Lions Club banquet without great food and a strong sense of fellowship.
Attendees enjoyed a meal prepared by Lion Greg Copeland and Lion Karen Hauser, while desserts were provided by Lion Angie Kennedy, Lion Francis Nault and his wife Sabrina, and Lion Bill Reitz. In true Lions Club fashion, the afternoon also included songs and traditions that brought plenty of smiles to those in attendance.
A total of 18 students were selected as Junior Lions this year, with each student receiving a commemorative lion statue featuring the Lions Club logo to mark the achievement.
Among those honored, Ethan McLean and Gracie Fuksa were selected to receive scholarships recognizing their accomplishments and leadership. Each student was awarded a $500 scholarship.
The afternoon served as another reminder of the strong support system surrounding Kingfisher students and the many community organizations investing in the next generation.
Congratulations to all of this year’s Junior Lions on a well-deserved honor and an exciting future ahead.
