It was off to the races Saturday morning as runners laced up and hit the pavement for the 3rd Annual Blazin’ Past Burns 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run at First Baptist Church in Kingfisher.
With cool temps and plenty of motivation (and maybe a little friendly competition), 71 runners took part in this year’s event, turning it into one of the strongest showings yet.
Leading the pack was Blake Jech, who crossed the finish line with an impressive time of 17:54, setting the pace early. Close behind was Joseph Thompson at 18:48, followed by Fernando Jaramillo at 19:11 to round out the top three.
On the women’s side, Jackie Mania claimed the top female spot and an impressive 6th overall finish with a time of 21:20.
The top 10 featured a strong mix of youth and experience, with runners ranging from teenagers to seasoned veterans.
One of the highlights of the day was the wide variety of participants. From 8-year-old Dalilah Dixon, who powered her way through the course, to 72-year-old Joe Wittrock, who put together an impressive run of his own, the event truly lived up to its “fun for everyone” reputation.
The Wittrock family made it a group effort this year, with multiple family members crossing the finish line, proving that running might just be the family business.
Beyond the competition, the event brought the community together for a morning of fitness, encouragement, and just enough friendly trash talk to keep things interesting.
The event raised $17,069 and The big check went to The Oklahoma Firefighters Burn Camp. The Oklahoma Firefighters Burn Camp is a free five-day summer camp in Oklahoma for children aged 6-16 who have survived serious burn or disfiguring injuries. Held annually, it provides a safe, supportive environment for healing, featuring activities like swimming, fishing, and team building, designed to foster confidence and foster a supportive community.
