On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Governor Kevin Stitt announced the appointment of three new members to the Oklahoma State Board of Education (OSBE). This decision comes in the wake of ongoing controversies within the Oklahoma State Department of Education and disappointing performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
Governor Stitt emphasized the paramount importance of providing the best possible education for Oklahoma children. He expressed concern over the recent negative headlines and subpar NAEP results, attributing them to unnecessary political conflicts within the education system. Recognizing the significance of education in shaping the state’s future workforce, Governor Stitt underscored the need for a new perspective and a reinvigorated focus on the state’s educational objectives.
The nominees introduced by Governor Stitt for the Oklahoma State Board of Education are:
– Ryan Deatherage from Kingfisher
– Michael Tinney from Norman
– Chris VanDenhende from Tulsa
Governor Stitt expressed gratitude to the existing board members, Sarah Lepak and Zach Archer, for their dedicated service to the state.
It is important to note that the newly appointed board members are poised to undergo Senate approval before officially joining the Oklahoma State Board of Education.
