Both the Kingfisher Police Department and the Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office are warning residents about scam text messages and phone calls currently circulating in the area.
One scam involves a text message claiming to be from the “Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Traffic Unit” regarding an outstanding speeding ticket. The message includes a suspicious payment link and threatens license suspension in an attempt to create urgency.
Officials remind residents that law enforcement agencies will not request payment through text messages.
Residents are urged to:
- Avoid clicking on any links or providing personal or financial information
- Understand that official citations are handled through proper court channels, not unsolicited messages
If you receive this type of message, delete it immediately. Anyone who has already clicked the link or provided information should contact their bank and report the incident right away.
A second scam involves phone calls that appear to come from the Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office number, (405) 375-4242. In these calls, the individual identifies himself as “Deputy Lawrence” and claims the recipient has outstanding warrants, demanding payment to avoid arrest.
Authorities confirm this is a scam. Law enforcement will not call to demand payment or request banking information.
Residents are encouraged to share this information, especially with family members who may not use social media, as scammers often target elderly individuals.
