The Kingfisher Yellowjackets kicked off their 2025 football season in dramatic fashion on Friday, September 5, as they traveled to face the Weatherford Eagles. From the opening whistle to the final snap, it was a nail-biter that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Trailing by 14 points heading into the fourth quarter, the Jackets refused to back down. With just over nine minutes to play, quarterback Jhett Birdwell found Brody Boeckman for a clutch touchdown strike, and Rhett Schlegel nailed the extra point to cut the deficit to 21–14. Moments later, Weatherford coughed up a costly fumble, and Brett Calamateo pounced on it to swing the momentum firmly in Kingfisher’s favor.
On the very next play, Birdwell connected with Boeckman again—this time on a deep ball from Kingfisher’s 27-yard line. Boeckman did the rest, outrunning the Eagles’ defense for a highlight-reel touchdown. With Schlegel’s kick, the game was knotted at 21, and the Yellowjackets stormed into overtime.
The extra period brought more fireworks. Weatherford struck first with a touchdown, but Kingfisher quickly answered back. In a bold move, the Jackets went for the win with a two-point conversion, but the pass just missed its mark. The Eagles escaped with the victory, but Kingfisher walked away with its head held high.
It wasn’t the final score the Jackets wanted, but it was the kind of performance that sets the tone for a season. Grit, determination, and never backing down—that’s Yellowjacket football.
