The Kingfisher School Board held its monthly meeting on September 8 after rescheduling it because of the Labor Day holiday.
The board began by approving minutes from four special board meetings: August 7, August 12, August 31, 2026, and September 3, 2026. Members also approved the district’s financial reports, including accounts payable, payroll, conference funding, building fund activity, change orders, the treasurer’s report, and custodians’ activity. The board welcomed suggestions for making future financial reports easier to understand and determining which expenses should receive more public discussion.
Several policy updates were approved to keep the district aligned with state and federal requirements. These included revisions involving bullying procedures, child-abuse reporting, maternity leave, and the Readers Act. The board also approved a collaborative support agreement for Kerry Edwards, fundraisers supporting cross country, track, boys basketball, and junior high students, and the district’s comprehensive literacy policy and plan.
Much of the discussion focused on the district’s budget challenges. Board members considered employing Albany Cortez as the high school secretary and discussed sharing the position between Heritage and Kingfisher High School as a cost-saving measure. The board also decided to freeze nonessential positions while continuing to support roles considered necessary for student programs, including the vocal-music pianist.
District leaders emphasized transparency, teamwork, shared sacrifice, and community involvement as they work to address the budget deficit. Board members were asked to recommend community members and other stakeholders who could offer valuable input. Additional meetings with the district’s financial partners are also planned.
Administrators shared updates from each school. At Heritage, students are participating in fundraisers and art workshops, vision screenings are coming up, and creative incentives are being used to encourage strong attendance. Air-conditioning maintenance is planned, and recent benchmark results were positive, with targeted interventions beginning for students who need additional support.
At Kingfisher Junior High, students recently celebrated spirit week and completed benchmark testing. Staff members are following up on action items from the MTSS survey while encouraging teachers to use digital tools for regular classroom assessments.
At Kingfisher High School, benchmark testing and advisory activities are underway. Athletic teams and academic competition groups remain active, and students and staff are preparing for homecoming week and its community events.
