Drivers traveling south on U.S. Highway 81 out of Kingfisher will soon see a lower speed limit.
The Kingfisher City Commission has approved reducing the speed limit to 35 mph on a section of Highway 81 extending just past Johnsons of Kingfisher. Once new signs are installed, the 35 mph zone will stretch approximately 1.4 miles south from the U.S. 81 and Highway 33 intersection.
Assistant City Manager Jonah Humes said the change is intended to improve safety as traffic continues to increase with new businesses in the area. The upcoming fire station on the south side of town was also a factor, as emergency vehicles will regularly be entering and exiting the highway.
Humes said the current school zone on Main Street will be removed and replaced with a flashing pedestrian crossing similar to those on 13th Street and in downtown Kingfisher.
The new speed limit signs are expected to be installed within the next few weeks.
